Case Study: Game Changer

Game Changer is a collaboration between Improving Me, Widnes Vikings RLFC, Halton CCG and Sopra Steria to help improve the health and wellbeing of local young people.

The programme involves Vikings players and coaches providing wellbeing and exercise sessions in 36 Halton primary schools. By targeting children in years 2 to 4, the scheme is working with over 3,000 boys and girls in the area.

Delivered across a 24 week monitoring period, the children receive 12 weeks of focused support from Vikings through completing a combination of practical and classroom activities based around healthy eating.

While engaging the children in the physical activity sessions is a critical part of the Game Changer programme, changing parents and teachers habits to physical activity is essential. Through the scheme, schools will develop their own approaches to unlocking an extra 15 minutes of physical activity every day through their own innovative ideas and thus complete their Game Changer pledges. The project also includes a range of healthy eating workshops where children and parents will learn how to "Eat Like a Pro" in partnership with Halton Health Improvement Team.
