Maternity Services
Maternity services cover care for women from when they become pregnant and access care, to sign off by the midwife (usually around 10 days after the birth but can be up to 6 weeks postnatally). The components of maternity services are typically divided into the three stages of pregnancy: antenatal, intrapartum (birth) and postnatal care.
Transforming maternity care is integral to the delivery of our vision for women's and children's services. Pregnancy and childbirth can be one of the greatest influences on nutrition, lifestyle choices, exercise and access to the right healthcare and professional services for women and their babies. It is also a time when brothers and sisters, men and other generations of the family can also be reached too and supported to take control of their health and improve their life chances too.
Public health factors tackled during pregnancy will provide a better start in life and will reduce the burden on other services such as neonatal intensive care and paediatrics who are feeling the strain from highly interventionist, complex maternity care, where avoidable harm can be prevented.
